Chelsea Aim to Offload More Players
Mauricio Pochettino, manager of the elite Chelsea club, has some tricky decisions to make as he starts to scale back his “massive squad” ahead of the new season.
While the Blues took as many as 29 players on their trip to the United States of America, it’s clear from their 1-1 draw with Newcastle at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia yesterday, Wednesday 26 July, that significant changes need to be made.
“It is about creating a squad with good balance, and people who have the opportunity to play and can compete for their place,” Pochettino said as he reflected on the stalemate in the post-match press conference.
“We need 22, 23, 24 players with some younger and that’s it. I am so sorry because maybe the decision will be tough, but we need to build a good and balanced team who want to compete for things,” he added.
It appears that some of the difficult decisions are already underway, as striker Romelu Lukaku – who was on loan to Inter Milan last season but has since returned to the Blues – has been left feeling uncertain about his future as he sits in England, waiting for an update on a potential transfer to Juventus.
